My First Speed Date Experience

My friend Cathy called me and asked me what I was doing Friday night. Well, I was doing the usual. Coming home from a long day at the office and relaxing in front of the TV with a pizza and some pop. I would have Roscoe, my West Highland Terrier for company. She then asked me if I had ever heard of speed dating. I was taken back at first telling her I don’t do drugs! I couldn’t believe she mentioned such a thing.

Cathy then proceeded to tell me what speed dating is. It sounded very interesting and frightening at the same time. I would have all these strange men sitting across from me and I had to ask them questions. She told me that I would only get 8 minutes to talk to someone and then a new one would come sit in the seat. Sounds a bit like musical chairs I told her. After talking to her for awhile, I decided to give it a try.

Friday was only 2 days away. Now I had to worry about what I was going to wear and how to fix my hair. I was a nervous wreck by the time Cathy came by to pick me up on Friday. When she got there, she was wearing blue jeans, a sweatshirt and her hair was pulled back in a pony tail. I was flabbergasted. I told her I couldn’t believe she was going to go meet a guy that she may want to date dressed like that. After she explained that it’s not suppose to be based totally on looks, but on  how they reply to our questions, I went and changed into blue jeans too. Then we sat down and made a list of about 10 questions to ask these guys. It’s better to have a list so you don’t just sit there and stare at one another.

It was time to go and off we went on our speed dating date with our hair in pony tails and dressed not to kill. I felt more like I was dressed to spend the evening with Roscoe as I had planned. He looked at me with sad eyes as I left.

When we got to the site, there were tables and chairs all set up and ready for us. We finished registering and took seats next to each other. I was starting to get nervous. I saw this guy that I took an immediate interest in. He was talking with a group of guys, but you could see he was checking out the girls as they came in. Then Cathy pointed him out to me too. Wow, now it seemed like we both were interested in the same guy. That wasn’t good.

The speed dating was starting. The guys began taking their places across from the girls. My notes in hand and ready, I nervously began asking questions and the guys replied. It got easier and more fun as time went. You could tell which guys had done speed dating before and which ones were new at it. By the end of the evening, after spending about 8 minutes with 15 different guys, I had a couple I was interested in. Cathy had hers picked out too.

The sponsor of the night came around and collected our choices. Then they checked with the guys to see what their choices were. If a guy and a girl both showed interest in each other, the sponsor then exchanged the information they needed to contact one another. I got really excited when I found out that the guy I had been checking out prior to the start of the speed date had showed an interest in me. He didn’t seem to have cared for Cathy though. She was mildly disappointed but had found another interesting guy.

The whole speed dating thing was fun and I would do it again if I have to. So far, I am  having fun with Denny. He loves dogs. He also loves watching a good movie and eating pizza. Maybe I have found that special person. Time will tell. As far as Cathy goes, she’s a little jealous. So far she has gone to a couple speed dating events looking for her special someone. She is going again tonight. I hope she finds him.
